How North Carolina taxes your paycheck
North Carolina's individual income tax rate for 2026 is 3.99%. The Department of Revenue's withholding tables add 0.1% to that, so your employer takes 4.09% of your taxable pay.
Taxable pay is your yearly pay minus the North Carolina standard deduction and $2,500 for each allowance on your Form NC-4. The withholding formula uses a standard deduction of $12,750 for single, married and surviving spouse filers and $19,125 for heads of household. The yearly tax is divided by your number of paychecks and rounded to the nearest dollar.
Form NC-4 tells you to enter 0 allowances unless its worksheet gives you more, so this calculator starts with 0. The worksheet gives extra allowances for large itemized deductions, the child deduction and tax credits, to surviving spouses, and to married couples filing jointly when one spouse expects wages and taxable retirement benefits of $10,250 or less. The calculator uses the filing status you pick for your W-4 for the NC-4 as well.
A traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health premiums lower your North Carolina tax the same way they lower your federal income tax, because North Carolina uses the federal definition of wages for withholding.
| Deduction | Rate | Applies to wages up to |
|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | 10% to 37% | No limit |
| Social Security | 6.2% | $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% (2.35% over $200,000) | No limit |
| North Carolina income tax | 4.09% | No limit |
How to use the North Carolina paycheck calculator
Enter your salary, or your hourly wage and hours, choose how often you are paid and pick the filing status on your W-4. The calculator estimates your North Carolina (NC) take-home pay for each paycheck and for the year, after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and North Carolina income tax.
It follows the published withholding formulas that employers' payroll systems use, so it works as a paycheck estimator for a job offer, a raise or a change to your W-4. Open "401(k), benefits and W-4 details" to add pre-tax deductions, dependents or extra withholding. Your real paycheck can differ if your employer takes out deductions the calculator does not know about.

How many allowances should I claim on Form NC-4?

Does a 401(k) lower my North Carolina taxes?
Yes. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are left out of the pay North Carolina taxes, just as they are for federal income tax.
