How Indiana taxes your paycheck

Indiana's state income tax rate for 2026 is 2.95%. Your employer applies it to your pay after subtracting $1,000 a year for each personal exemption and $1,500 for each additional dependent exemption on your Form WH-4.

Every Indiana county has an income tax, and your employer withholds it on the same taxable pay as the state tax. The rates in effect from October 1, 2026 run from 0.5% in Porter County to 3% in Randolph County. Marion County, which includes Indianapolis, charges 2.02%.

The county is set once a year: you pay the rate of the Indiana county you lived in on January 1. If you lived outside Indiana on January 1 but your main place of work is in an Indiana county, that county's rate applies instead.

A traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health premiums lower your Indiana tax the same way they lower your federal income tax.

Form WH-4 also allows $3,000 for each adopted child. This calculator does not include that exemption.

How to use the Indiana paycheck calculator

Enter your salary, or your hourly wage and hours, choose how often you are paid and pick the filing status on your W-4. The calculator estimates your Indiana (IN) take-home pay for each paycheck and for the year, after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, Indiana income tax and local taxes.

It follows the published withholding formulas that employers' payroll systems use, so it works as a paycheck estimator for a job offer, a raise or a change to your W-4. Open "401(k), benefits and W-4 details" to add pre-tax deductions, dependents or extra withholding. Your real paycheck can differ if your employer takes out deductions the calculator does not know about.

What is the Indiana state income tax rate in 2026?

2.95%. It is a flat rate that your employer applies to your pay after the exemptions on your Form WH-4.

How much is Indiana county income tax?

It depends on the county. From October 1, 2026 the rates run from 0.5% in Porter County to 3% in Randolph County, and Marion County charges 2.02%. The table on this page lists all 92 counties.

Which county's tax do I pay if I live in one Indiana county and work in another?

The county you lived in on January 1 of the year. The county where you work matters only if you lived outside Indiana on January 1.

How much are the exemptions on Form WH-4 worth?

$1,000 a year for each personal exemption, $1,500 for each additional dependent exemption and $3,000 for each adopted child. Your employer subtracts them from your pay before applying the state and county rates.

Does a 401(k) lower my Indiana taxes?

Yes. Traditional 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums are left out of the pay that Indiana and its counties tax.
