How New York taxes your paycheck
New York State withholding starts at 3.9% of taxable pay and rises with income. Your employer annualizes your pay, subtracts a deduction allowance of $7,400 if your withholding form says single or head of household, or $7,950 if it says married, takes off $1,000 for each allowance you claim, and then uses the state's 2026 rate schedule.
The status and allowances come from Form IT-2104, New York's own withholding certificate. The form tells single people with one job and no dependents to enter 0 allowances, which is what this calculator starts with. The calculator uses the filing status you pick for your W-4 for the New York form as well.
A traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health premiums lower your New York tax the same way they lower your federal income tax, because New York withholds on the pay that counts as wages for federal withholding.
If you live in New York City, your employer also withholds the city's resident income tax. It runs from 2.05% to 4.25% of taxable pay, with the top rate above $60,000, after a deduction allowance of $5,000 (single) or $5,500 (married) and $1,000 per allowance. Form IT-2104 asks whether you live in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or Staten Island.
Yonkers residents pay a surcharge equal to 16.75% of their New York State tax. People who work in Yonkers but live somewhere else pay a 0.5% earnings tax on their gross pay, with a small exclusion for pay of $30,000 a year or less.
Two more deductions pay for state insurance programs. Disability insurance costs 0.5% of wages but never more than 60 cents a week. Paid Family Leave costs 0.432% of gross wages in 2026 until you have paid $411.91 for the year, which happens at about $95,349 of pay. Employers are allowed, but not required, to take these from your pay.

How to use the New York paycheck calculator
Enter your salary, or your hourly wage and hours, choose how often you are paid and pick the filing status on your W-4. The calculator estimates your New York (NY) take-home pay for each paycheck and for the year, after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, New York income tax, New York payroll deductions and local taxes.
It follows the published withholding formulas that employers' payroll systems use, so it works as a paycheck estimator for a job offer, a raise or a change to your W-4. Open "401(k), benefits and W-4 details" to add pre-tax deductions, dependents or extra withholding. Your real paycheck can differ if your employer takes out deductions the calculator does not know about.
