How New Jersey taxes your paycheck

New Jersey employers withhold income tax with the Division of Taxation's percentage method tables. Your yearly pay, minus $1,000 for each allowance on your Form NJ-W4, goes through a rate table that starts at 1.5% and rises in steps to 11.8% on taxable pay above $1,000,000.

The table depends on the filing status on your NJ-W4. Single filers and married people filing separately are withheld at Rate A. Married couples filing jointly, heads of household and surviving spouses are withheld at Rate B unless they pick a different table from the wage chart on the form, which is meant for households with more than one income. This calculator uses Rate A or Rate B, based on the filing status you choose for your W-4.

New Jersey does not follow the federal rules for pre-tax deductions. Contributions to a 401(k) are left out of New Jersey taxable pay, up to the federal limit, but contributions to other retirement plans are taxed in the year you make them. The state's withholding instructions also count amounts taken out of cafeteria plans as taxable pay, so this calculator does not subtract pre-tax health premiums before figuring New Jersey income tax.

Three worker contributions come out of a New Jersey paycheck in 2026. Unemployment insurance and the workforce funds take 0.425% of the first $44,800 you earn, at most $190.40 for the year. Temporary disability insurance takes 0.19% and family leave insurance 0.23%, each on the first $171,100, at most $325.09 and $393.53.

New Jersey and Pennsylvania have a reciprocal agreement. A Pennsylvania resident who works in New Jersey can give the employer Form NJ-165 so that New Jersey income tax is not withheld. This calculator is for people who live and work in New Jersey.

How to use the New Jersey paycheck calculator

Enter your salary, or your hourly wage and hours, choose how often you are paid and pick the filing status on your W-4. The calculator estimates your New Jersey (NJ) take-home pay for each paycheck and for the year, after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, New Jersey income tax and New Jersey payroll deductions.

It follows the published withholding formulas that employers' payroll systems use, so it works as a paycheck estimator for a job offer, a raise or a change to your W-4. Open "401(k), benefits and W-4 details" to add pre-tax deductions, dependents or extra withholding. Your real paycheck can differ if your employer takes out deductions the calculator does not know about.
